A butternut squash (winter squash) shares a large pot with a sunflower

Six on Saturday – 3 Apr, 2021

April 3, 2021April 21, 2021 by Scott Dee, posted in Blogroll

The garden is hopping right along as Spring gets underway here! All the plants are racing upward toward the sun, and even the Ginkgo has decided it's time to wake up.

March Garden Roundup

April 2, 2021April 27, 2021 by Scott Dee, posted in Blogroll, Nature Appreciation

Spring has finally sprung in the garden, and everything is getting growing. Most of the seedlings have been transplanted to their long-term homes (at least until they end up in the kitchen...). Check out the post to see how all the plants are getting along!

A single sunflower growing out of a small peat moss packet in a tiny terracotta pot

Back again for another Six on Saturday! This week the garden (halfway) wakes up for Spring - Tomatoes and The Lonely Sunflower decide it's time, while the Ginkgo argues otherwise.

The Lonely Ginkgo

December 23, 2020April 2, 2021 by Scott Dee, posted in My Garden, Nature Appreciation

The Ginkgo is currently most threatened not by disease or the environment, but by logging. Our homes are our own environments. We get a say at what survives, and can even help plants thrive that otherwise might be disappearing.

@MindfulFoliage

I hope these hummingbirds' momma doesn't freak out too much!
I've started loving a muted color palette after spending some time wilderness camping. The plants, rocks, even the earth underneath it all is thriving with its tan palette. I wonder how much the color changes when there's rain!
Two things that you have to do during a Maine autumn -
Some more amazing fall colors in Boston! We don't get anything like that in SoCal, and especially not in front of lovely brick buildings.
There's some wonderfully subtle (and not so subtle) plant life around the Harvard area, even as winter starts its approach.
Always a fan of finding Ginkgo trees in the city! 🍂 They're such sturdy sulfer-eaters. 🌲 We could do with more of these trees in LA. They might clean up some of the smog!
Finally got around to making some salsa with the Shishito peppers! It turned out quite well, and not nearly as spicy as expected.
Always loving the hikes with the Sierra Club!
Found this ferocious beast growing next to the olive tree. I was told that having mushrooms in soil indicates high nutrients - and here I'd been thinking it was about time to fertilize.
